“So what am I supposed to do? Weep and moan?”

“Anybody else would.”

“Who'd listen?”

Ali lifted her head to look straight into his eyes and smiled — that wonderful smile.

“Me,” she said simply.

He felt so close to her. It was almost like at the dance —in the shower costume together. This time, though, instead of kissing her, he spoke.

“Well, uh, would you like to listen, say on Saturday night?”

“Sure” she said, jotting her address on a piece of paper for him. “Bye.” Quickly, she brushed his lips with hers and turned to go into her classroom.

Daniel floated down the hall towards his next class. As he turned the corner, he was brought down to earth by bumping into Johnny. Johnny looked at the paper Ali had given Daniel, still in his hand.

“Don’t push it, punk,” said Johnny, trying to grab the paper. Daniel carefully evaded Johnny’s grasp, but realized it was going to be a losing battle. Johnny was bigger. Out of the corner of his eye, Daniel spotted one of his teachers.

“Mr. Harris,” he called. “Can I talk to you a minute?” Johnny’s hands obediently went to his side, as Mr. Harris turned to the duo, looking a little puzzled.

“LaRusso,” Daniel supplied. “I’m in your third period history class. I really got a lot I out of that lecture you gave about how Indians got their horses.”

Mr. Harris smiled.

“That's nice to hear,” he said.

“Yeah, well, I was trying to explain to my friend here how the stuff all fit together with colonization and all that But, then I messed up. So, could you give us a quick review?”

Mr. Harris was clearly flattered.

“I’m free this period. How about you?” he asked.

Daniel looked Invitingly at Johnny who said, “I've got a class. But thanks anyway.” With that, he turned and stalked off.

Daniel smiled, relieved.
